The professional association of teachers of students with specific learning difficulties

Nottinghamshire

PATOSS members who would be interested in joining are invited to write to Helen Wilson at the following email address: patossnottinghamshire@gmail.com

This local group has reached its first birthday! It continues to thrive and membership is growing. Meetings are very well attended and there is definitely a healthy feel about the group, due mainly to a sterling effort made by the outgoing Chair and Secretary. At our first AGM in June there were some changes to the committee, Ann Harris Locke was voted in as our new Chair and Helen Wilson has taken over the role of Secretary. I am sure both of them will be well supported by the existing committee. Following the AGM (which we kept short) we heard Trevor Cotterill present a fascinating talk giving an insight into Tourette's Syndrome, when the word 'dyslexia' was not used once until questions afterwards! There are, however a number of characteristics which are similar to those of dyslexic people although the two conditions are not known to be co existing as with many other learning difficulties.

Thursday 6th October 2011, 7.00 pm. Dr Joel Talcott, Professor of Developmental Cognitive neuroscience of Aston University. His talk is entitled; Refining our understanding of developmental disability: a dimensional view.

"An emerging conceptual framework for developmental disabilities such as developmental dyslexia focuses on their shared and overlapping characteristics as well as their unique risk factors. In this talk, I will consider the implications of this broader view of learning difficulties for genetic, biological, cognitive and behavioural models of developmental dyslexia. Increasing our understanding of the nature of the overlap between developmental disabilities helps push us away from the concept of disabilities as independent categories, and toward the development of more comprehensive and multi-dimensional descriptions. Our success in this endeavour will ultimately impact upon how disabilities are defined and the way in which diagnosis and interventions are approached."
