Introduction

The day is based on a ‘hand-on’ practical workshop approach, to encourage participants to think about the learners they work with from a neurodiverse background, and to think how the CPA approach can be used to aid their learning as well as how to reduce the students’ barriers to learning.

Course Description

Maths is recognised to be difficult to teach and even harder to learn. It is estimated that 25% of the population have mathematical learning difficulties, which has a devastating impact in both education opportunities and jobs prospects.

Singapore has demonstrated through the application of the work of Jerome Bruner and Zoltan Dienes the teaching of maths can become more learner friendly. The application of the concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach enables learners to understand, use and apply mathematical concepts which help to overcome their barriers to learning maths. 

The purpose of the day training is to enable the participants to experience a ‘hand-on’ practical workshop approach to applying the CPA approach.

Participants will be encouraged to think about the learners they work with from a neurodiverse background and how the approach can be used to aid their learning and how to reduce the students’ barriers to learning.

The application of the CPA approach is not a linear progression, but a way to enrich the understanding of a mathematical concept as the learner is introduced to a new concept. Emphasis will be placed on the crucial role that the application of equipment plays in the learning process.  

The day will cover the following:

  • Understanding of why learners have problems learning maths
  • Understanding how to apply the CPA approach to the teaching of maths
  • Hand-on approach to solving maths problems for learners
  • Using equipment to enrich both learning and understanding of mathematical concepts

Understanding how to encourage learners to think before and after they have completed a mathematical task on what they are doing and how to apply it and what they understand of the process.

Course Outcome

  • To begin to learn how to apply the CPA approach to teaching of mathematics to learners

  • Learn to use both equipment and language effectively to enhances a learners understanding of maths.

To understand the challenges learners from a neurodiverse background face with regards to their learning of maths.

Programme

This training course is delivered as a full-day session beginning with coffee, and registration from 9.00am. The presentation starts at 10.00am prompt and closes at 4:15pm. Please note that lunch is provided on all full-day training courses.

Presenter: Andrew Jeffrey

He is passionate about children and how they learn (as well as why they don’t) and can often be seen using magic to help enhance children’s understanding of mathematical principles. In his spare time Andrew likes writing, performing magic and running marathons very slowly.
