Gain confidence in the more subtle and complex areas of diagnostic assessment
Refresh your knowledge of statistical concepts in psychometric testing
Ensure your assessment reports meet current professional best practice recommendations
This event is intended as a training opportunity for specialist teachers already conducting full diagnostic assessments but who would like to gain further confidence in more detailed analysis and revisit advanced statistical concepts in psychometric testing to ensure their practice meets current best practice recommendations. An experienced assessor will guide professionals through careful standardised test use and data analysis so practitioners can have improved confidence in their assessment practice and their diagnostic conclusions. Working with colleagues, an opportunity to apply these strategies to case study data will close the day. Please note: Examples will focus on secondary and adult learners
Choosing tests
Using reliable evidence from scores as the foundation of a confident conclusion
Interpreting and reporting difficult score profiles
Presenting test results in an effective and accessible style
Exploration of more complex learner profiles
This very popular course has been developed following requests from Patoss members to focus more precisely on the data analysis element of the assessment process. It will nevertheless reference the key requirement to present assessment findings in an accessible format.
All delegates are asked to bring a current, standardised test manual for use during the day.
SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) Authorised Training
For those professionals seeking to update an Assessment Practising Certificate this event will contribute to the core assessment practice CPD requirements. If you have any questions on this aspect please contact the Patoss office or see the SASC website at: www.sasc.org.uk

Best Practice in Diagnostic Assessment Report Writing
A good diagnostic assessment report is an immensely valuable document. At its heart it must support an individual to understand their strengths and weaknesses to go forward to achieve their goals. Yet, an assessment report might also have to be acceptable to a wide variety of other audiences and be rigorous enough to stand up to potential legal challenge. This is no easy task and this CPD event will provide invaluable support for professionals trying to meet these goals. The course will allow you to:
Reflect on how your assessment reports meet current SASC Guidelines for best practice
Explore ways to streamline the writing process by adopting a structured approach
Develop jargon-free writing - consider how best to communicate technical information
Avoid common pitfalls when submitting a report for professional review
Using a single case study approach this event will focus on generic report writing skills, so is suitable for professionals working across all age ranges, including those who must ensure reports are acceptable to support Disabled Student's Allowance applications.
By the end of the day you will have written a full diagnostic report with the support of the presenters and through sharing practice with fellow delegates working in similar contexts. A complete exemplar report will not be provided - given the vast array of settings and purposes for reports - but a clear structure and approach will be ensured to apply in your own practice.
Please note: It will be assumed that delegates are qualified to conduct full diagnostic assessments and are familiar with key underlying principles and assessment procedures and common tests.
Diagnostic Assessment at Primary Level:
Testing and Reporting - 29th February 2012 - SASC approved - PAT104-29212
10am - 4pm.
Led by Debby Ardley and Jen McDermott
Best Practice in Diagnostic Assessment Report Writing
A diagnostic assessment report at primary level is an extremely important document. It must enable all those involved with the child to understand his/her strengths and weaknesses, and provide recommendations for support that will allow the child to go forward to achieve his/her goals. It must also be acceptable to a wide variety of audiences and be rigorous enough to stand up to potential legal challenge. This CPD event aims to support professionals trying to meet these goals. The course will allow you to:
Explore best practice in full diagnostic assessment at KS1 / KS2
Explore ways to streamline the writing process by adopting a structured approach
Develop jargon-free writing - consider how best to communicate technical information
Reflect on how your assessment reports meet current SASC Guidelines for best practice
Meet the criteria for report writing at Assessment Practising Certificate level
This event will focus on generic report writing skills and will cover the following areas:
Choosing tests
Presenting test results in an effective and accessible style
Using reliable evidence from scores as the foundation of a confident conclusion
Making appropriate recommendations for classroom and specialist support
By the end of the day you will feel more confident in your ability to produce a full diagnostic assessment report at primary level. A complete exemplar report will not be provided, given the vast array of settings and purposes for reports, but a clear structure and approach will be ensured, to apply in your own practice. There will be plenty of opportunity throughout the day for questions
Please note: It will be assumed that delegates are qualified to conduct full diagnostic assessments and are familiar with key underlying principles and assessment procedures and common tests.
All delegates are asked to bring a current, standardised test manual for use during the day.
