Working with Adults in Regulated Activity

Working with Children in Regulated Activity

Working with vulnerable groups at the applicant's home address

Please consider before completing the working from home question whether the:

  • applicant (whether in voluntary or paid employment) carries out the main duties of their job from their own home address

If the applicant is working from their own home address, providing a service or care from the place where they live, set the working from home questions to Yes.

If the applicant is providing a service or care outside the place where they themselves live, and going to somebody else's home, set the working from home questions as No.

When a home based check is requested, the police consider any relevant information they have in relation to the address stated on the application form. If they deem it necessary, the police will release information on the certificate which may not be just be in relation to the applicant directly, but about people who live at that address or are known associates or visitors to it.

Third party information can be useful to employers; it allows them to accurately assess the risk of placing children or adults, who need care or support, in a household. However, if you tick the working from home question incorrectly you could find yourself in a situation where you have access to information you have no authority to see.

The police often contact the DBS to confirm the position stated on an application is actually home based before they continue with their checks which consequently adds delays into the overall recruitment process.

I understand it is a criminal offence to knowingly make a false statement when applying for a DBS check.
