OnDemand: Intervention and Management of Literacy Disorders

Effective intervention to improve a learner with literacy disorders, must be focused on interventions which are proven to be evidence based in terms of their effectiveness.

Introduction

This course will enable you to evaluate the effectiveness of literacy interventions based on the scientifically proven use of controlled randomised trials. This means that your recommendations in your assessment reports and delivery of your literacy intervention programmes should reflect what is proven to work, so that you can effectively target and support the profile of your learners.

Course Description

This course will enable you to make effective literacy intervention recommendations in your diagnostic reports and advise on their implementation. It is important to recommend literacy intervention programmes and approaches which are scientifically proven to be effective for learners with literacy disorders and which are targeted to the cognitive, educational, and biological level of the learner’s needs. Also, the course will enable you to review how to manage literacy intervention both at home and through your educational setting.

  • Understanding CRTs (controlled randomised trials)
  • Using literacy interventions in a targeted manner
  • The broader management of literacy disorders

Course Outcome

  • To appreciate the importance of interventions that are both theoretically motivated and scientifically proven using CRTs (controlled randomised trials)
  • To compare literacy interventions that target the cognitive, educational and biological levels
  • To consider broader school- and home- based management strategies

Pre-requisites

It is recommended that participants have access to the following book: ‘Understanding and Supporting Children with Literacy Difficulties’.

Target Audience

Assessors, specialist teachers, SENCOs: This series of events is not just for assessors though assessment is covered comprehensively in lecture 3 of the series. They are suitable for any teacher who has a special interest in, and responsibility for, teaching literacy skills, especially to those children who have special needs. They should enable teachers to have a better understanding of how children learn to read, what the nature of literacy difficulties is and how they can best help children from the teaching/intervention perspective. The courses would be fine for those in advisory/teacher roles, not just for those who carry out assessments.
