OnDemand: Morph Mastery Information Workshop for Parents - How to Use Morphology at Home to Aid your Child’s Learning

Morph Mastery is a morphological intervention to support spelling, reading and vocabulary for learners aged 9 - 13. In this practical workshop, presented by Louise Selby, the non-specialist parent can find out more.

Introduction

Morph Mastery is a multi-sensory and engaging way of teaching children aged 9 - 13 to improve their reading, vocabulary and spelling skills. Through morphology, they understand how words are made up into prefixes, roots and suffixes. This intervention follows the English National Curriculum and is being used in schools.

Course Description

Morph Mastery is a book containing ideas, resources and games for using morphology to support reading, spelling and vocabulary in a variety of settings. It also contains a complete teaching programme for learners who struggle with literacy skills, for use in schools. Many of the activities and games can be used at home.

In this 1.5-hour session, parents will gain background information and some practical ideas for using Morph Mastery at home. This workshop will give parents of an understanding of what Morph Mastery is, and how to use some of the methods and games. It will also help parents of children who struggle with spellings and language to understand how to support them using a meaning-based approach. It is an ideal workshop for parents of children already following the programme, but will be useful for any parent wishing to support their child at home.

This is a practical workshop for the beginner and non-specialist, and will cover some basic knowledge, principles, teaching techniques and games which make learning both multi-sensory and fun for the child.

This session will cover:

  • What is morphology? How does it differ from phonics?
  • An overview of Morph Mastery
  • Key methods in Morph Mastery and how to support at home
  • Games and activities to use at home

Course Outcome

At the end of the session, you will:
