OnDemand: Writing Skills for Reluctant Writers - Primary

Writing today is not a frill for the few, but an essential skill for us all. This course will help you motivate your students to begin to write and organise their thoughts. This course provides solutions for those students who talk a great narrative but who struggle to write it down.

Written language is considered by many to be the most challenging skill to teach and to learn. However, there are many oral and written activities that teachers can use concurrently with teaching of reading and spelling which will encourage the student to begin writing.

Course Description

This interactive webinar focusses on strategies to support reluctant writers to get their ideas down on paper through fiction and non-fiction. The strategies will reduce cognitive overload and provide practical solutions to address the three key reasons why writing can be so difficult for some learners.  Group based multi-sensory activities, ideal for whole class and small group settings, will be modelled, together with suggestions for how to teach information processing through mind maps and flow charts.

  • Employ motivational strategies to encourage your learner to begin to write
  • Learn to reduce the cognitive overload
  • Employ practical skills
  • Encourage your learners to plan their written work effectively

Delegates who attend this webinar will be offered a 15% discount on two of Neil MacKay's books: 'Total Teaching' and 'Taking the Hell out of Homework' for the writing courses
