Patoss Course Provider Approval Process

PATOSS approval process is for course providers who wish to have their training accepted by Patoss for Associate Membership. This is based on Dyslexia-SpLD Professional Development Framework[1] with suggested activities and assessment criteria. What follows is draft to be completed after Board approval of principle.

The foundation underpinning evaluation of courses that would give successful candidates Patoss professional membership is describes below. It will allow course providers to have their courses evaluated by Patoss and when approved publicise that successful candidates can apply for Patoss professional membership at Associate level and access to a TPC [membership on completion of course, TPC after having completed 1 year of specialist teaching post qualification]. Course providers would have to ensure external moderation by a body approved to validate training through level 7.

The following criteria must be met

  • The quality assurance procedures are met in full.
  • The course content meets the appropriate criteria in full.
  • The course is directed and taught by appropriately qualified personnel. All observation of practical work must be undertaken by a tutor who holds post-graduate diploma in SpLD teaching and assessment meeting requirements for Patoss Full Membership. It is important to ensure that all observing tutors are formally inducted and all evaluations are monitored.
  • All courses, attendance, blended or distance learning using tutors for observations should take formal steps to ensure standardisation and cross moderation. Assessors would undertake the observations. The Centre coordinator would be responsible for the team undertaking standardisation exercises and cross moderation.
  • Adequate time must be allocated for coverage of the course according to the stated guided learning hours.
  • Acceptable arrangements must be made for supervised teaching practice.
  • Appropriate means are in place to assess students’ progress and their final level of attainment.
  • An appropriately qualified external examiner, holding a level of professional qualification equivalent to the course they are verifying, is appointed.
  • Any modifications to course or personnel are reported to Patoss

The document Mapping Qualification to Patoss Associate Membership should be used as a checklist against evidence provided. In addition, further evidence to demonstrate the criteria above have been met should be provided.

The fee for Patoss course approval process is £500 and must be paid in advance of review. Approval will last 4 years.

Re-approval

Courses will be re-approved for a further four years if:

  • the content has been up-dated to take account of the changes in understanding of intervention methods with learners with specific learning difficulties that have taken place during the period of approval.
  • The staff teaching the course and/or the processes of teaching and assessment fulfil the Patoss course criteria in operation at the time of reapproval.

For higher level courses in teaching and assessing learners with SpLD meeting SASC guidelines in assessment theory and practice and Stage 5 of the Professional Development Framework leading to Full Membership of Patoss and when approved publicise that successful candidates can apply for Patoss professional membership at Full level and access to an Assessment Practising Certificate and a Teaching  Practising Certificate [membership and APC on completion of course, TPC after having completed 1 year of specialist teaching post qualification], and an APC on completion of the course. Course providers would have to ensure external validation by a body approved to validate training through level 7.

Tutors and assessors providing input and overseeing practice in diagnostic assessment must hold a current SpLD Assessment Practising Certificate or HCPC registration.

Patoss accepts courses approved by SASC as meeting requirements for Full Membership and an APC.
