Meeting the JCQ requirements for access arrangements assessor training and is equivalent to Level 7. Successful completion of the course will enable participants to carry out assessments for access arrangements in GCSE and GCE qualifications.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The course is delivered through blended learning, with four attendance days and a dedicated online learning platform. It will develop the theoretical and practical knowledge underpinning the assessment of learners for examination access arrangements, in line with the JCQ and Awarding Body regulations. It provides understanding of the key principles involved in conducting effective access arrangements assessments for individuals with learning needs.
Study time
The course involves 200 hours of study through two units, with 30 hours of taught sessions, both face-to-face and online.
Assessment
Assessment will take the form of a combination of theoretical assignment, critical reflection and practical tasks in assessment for access arrangements, including a recorded observation.

The courses begin each September and February and run through two terms
The London attendance dates are:
- Day 1 - Monday, 3rd February 2020
- Day 2 - Monday, 10 February 2020
- Day 3 - Monday, 27 April 2020
- Day 4 - Monday, 4 May 2020
Course Outcome
Successful completion of the course enables participants to carry out assessments for access arrangements in general qualifications (Form 8 Section C)
Participants will be able to take out either Associate or Supporting Membership of Patoss (depending on existing qualifications), join the Patoss Professional Practice Community Forum and be listed on the AAA Certificate Holders listing on the Patoss website.
Eligibility & Pre-Requisites
- Undergraduate degree and teaching qualification (e.g. QTS and/or Specialist teaching qualification, for example, Level 5 diploma in the teaching of learners with specific learning difficulties/dyslexia)
- Access to students (Y9-Y13 or FE) for assessment tasks
- Access to assessment materials
- Attendance is required on all four of the listed dates.
Pathway to APC
Holders of the Patoss AAA and a specialist teaching qualification will be eligible to enrol onto our postgraduate module leading to an SpLD Assessment Practising Certificate.
